About
Guy St. Clair
Guy St. Clair serves as President and Consulting Specialist
for Knowledge Services at SMR International, a
New York-based strategy consulting company. A past-president
of the Special Libraries Association, Guy St. Clair is Series
Editor for the Information Services Management Series, published
by K G Saur. He has written several important titles for the
series, including Entrepreneurial Librarianship: The Key to Effective
Information Services; Total Quality Management in Information
Services; Power and Influence: Enhancing Information Services
Within the Organization; and Customer Service in the Information
Environment. Other books written by Guy St. Clair include Change
Management in Action: Industry Leaders Describe How They Manage
Change in Information Services, published by the Special Libraries
Association in 1999. He is currently engaged in writing a narrative
history of SLA for the association’s centenary in 2009.
In his newest book, Beyond Degrees: Professional Learning for
Knowledge Services (K.G. Saur, 2003), St. Clair identifies the
coming new information profession as Knowledge
Services, which
he defines as the convergence of information management, knowledge
management, and strategic (performance-centered) learning. In “Knowledge
Services and SLA’s History: An Interview with Guy St. Clair,” published
in Information Outlook in September, 2003, St. Clair describes
how the historical role of the Special Libraries Association
(www.sla.org) has led the larger information management community
to focus on Knowledge Services.
A native of Virginia and a long-time resident of New York, St.
Clair has for many years maintained a strong affection for his
adopted city, and he takes particular interest in New York’s
culture, intellectual vigor, and its history. In the late 1990s,
St. Clair was commissioned to write A Venerable and Cherished
Institution: The University Club of New York, 1865-1990 (New
York, NY: The University Club, 1991), published to commemorate
the 125th anniversary of the founding of one of the city’s
most important cultural organizations. He continues to pursue
his interest in New York through his affiliations with several
of the city’s various cultural institutions.
